Sweet XO, Agoura Hills, CA

Sweet XO Frozen Yogurt Shop

Fro-yo girl here. Sweet XO might have the biggest fro-yo toppings bar in SoCal and it has a jaw dropping array of sweets to choose from, including candy sold by weight, warm brownies, warm cookies, fudge, mini and full size cupcakes, tea bar, make your own float machine, hot chocolate, fresh hot roasted nuts, ice cream, and 18 flavors of self-serve fro-yo.

The toppings and fro-yo are 42 cents an ounce. Toppings include freshly made whipped cream, flavored sugars, popping boba, mochi, freshly roasted hot nuts, cereal, roasted nuts, chocolate covered nuts, cookies, sprinkles, warm syrups from Sanders of Michigan, and a vast selection of candy, including individual flavors of Jelly Bellies. There are over 175 types of toppings. You can also add candy from the bins located throughout the store or add fro-yo to warm brownies and warm cookies.

Dry Toppings Bar

The fro-yo selection included a no sugar option, sorbet, vegan soy based fro-yo and soft serve ice cream.  There was only one tart fro-yo flavor during my visit, Euro Tart. Euro Tart was lemony and quite tart, even sour, and it didn’t have the lovely clean flavor of a better original tart fro-yo. Country Vanilla fro-yo was sweet and creamy with pronounced vanilla flavor, a good substitute for vanilla soft serve.

Sweet XO doesn’t stop with edible sweets. It also has rooms filled with gifts and clothing for men, women and kids. You’ll find bath salts sold by weight, home décor items, books, jewelry, lip glosses, soaps, lotions, candles, plush dolls, laptop bags, and more. Each room has bins filled with candy.

Front of Store, Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt

Come prepared to spend time browsing. The elaborate displays are worth admiring. Once you’ve selected your treats, make your way over to the fancy looking room with padded white banquettes.

Anyone in the area with a sweet tooth should check out Sweet XO.

21 Choices Frozen Yogurt, Pasadena, CA

21 Choices, Mix-in Frozen Yogurt Shop, Pasadena CA

Fro-yo girl here. Pasadena loves fro-yo and the most popular place in town is 21 Choices in Old Town. 21 Choices is a Pasadena institution. Its unique mix-in style fro-yo allows you to create a custom flavor with your choice of fro-yo and toppings/mix-ins. The toppings selection is mind boggling and includes candy, cookies, fruit, mochi, nuts, cereal, sprinkles, cookie dough, cupcakes, donuts, cheesecake, muffins, Twinkies, loaf cakes, tiramisu, brownies, Nutella, etc.

They’ve come up with suggested hand-made mix-in creations like Caramel Churro, Banana Cream Pie, Rocky Road and Strawberry Nutella. The mix-in creations are made in front of your eyes on a frozen table top. You can also opt for one of 6 soft serve fro-yo flavors a day. The staff normally offers samples to those waiting in line (and there’s usually a line).

Fro-yo prices: Tres Small $2.75/ Small $3.75/ Medium $4.75/ Large $5.75

Dry Mix-in’s, Soft-serve Frozen Yogurt Toppings

If you just want a soft serve fro-yo flavor and no mix-ins, you can use the express line which is much shorter. I’ve found that the sweet flavors that they created to mimic candy, cookies and pastries are better than the fruit and plainer yogurt flavors. Their signature flavor is probably Circus Animal Cookies, a pale pink concoction that tastes like Circus Animal Cookies. The Simply Yogurt, their original tart, was bland. The Valrhona Chocolate flavor wasn’t that sweet, tasted like cocoa powder and didn’t have a pleasant aftertaste. However, they shine when it comes to fro-yo flavors like Grasshopper Brownie, Butterfinger Meltdown and Reese’s Extreme.

21 Choices makes their fro-yo every couple of hours “using fresh organic ingredients” when available. In addition to fro-yo, they offer smoothies. I’ve never seen anyone order a smoothie.

Frozen Yogurt Menu

It’s a small, narrow, cheerful shop with lots of signs. Toppings seem to take up most of the space. There are no tables but there are benches that you can sit on inside.

The soft serve flavors of the day are posted on their website and you can sign up to receive the flavors via email.

Yogurt Star, San Jose, CA

Yogurt Star, Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt Shop

Fro-yo girl here. Yogurt Star is located in a Vietnamese strip mall and caters to the Vietnamese population in the area. The offerings include much more than frozen yogurt. You can get Vietnamese desserts (known as che), coffee, milk tea, fresh fruit smoothies (including the popular avocado smoothie) and freshly made pandan waffles. It’s perfectly situated for a snack or dessert after an excellent meal at one of the Vietnamese restaurants in the same strip mall.

As for fro-yo, they had 14 flavors of self-serve fro-yo a day and plentiful topping choices (popping boba, jellies, mochi, fruit, cereal, candy, nuts, sprinkles, cookies, syrups) for 30 cents an ounce (cheapest in town). Six fro-yo flavors weren’t available during my visit, including the one I really wanted, green tea. Toppings and fro-yo favored Asian preferences. Ask for sample cups at the register.

AirPump Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt Machines

Both the original tart and raspberry fro-yo were creamy, thick and smooth. The original tart had a lemony flavor and heavy cream like aftertaste. The raspberry fro-yo was not tart, nor was it too sweet. The raspberry flavor was subtle. The vanilla fro-yo was icy and too sweet. I always prefer creamy vanilla fro-yo.

The décor is simple and rather colorful with wide vertical stripes in many colors and posters of beverages. Dry toppings are kept in wall mounted dispensers. You can watch Vietnamese TV if you dine in. There are only a few chairs and tables.

Pinkberry, Santa Clara, CA

Pinkberry Frozen Yogurt

Fro-yo girl here. The fro-yo chain that started the tart fro-yo craze opened its doors in Santa Clara about 2 years ago. One of several Pinkberry locations in the Bay Area, the Santa Clara location is larger than average and has several perks, including free wi-fi, great A/C, and fairly easy strip mall parking.

The interior has the Pinkberry look and a relaxing, attractive, resort like atmosphere. Walls are pale blue, chairs feature an interesting modern web like look, light fixtures with wavy lines are reminiscent of swirls of fro-yo. I think my favorite design feature is the pebble floor.

Frozen Yogurt Shop

Friendly associates are on hand to make your fro-yo masterpiece. Every person is welcomed and greeted with enthusiasm. If you’re not happy with your fro-yo, they’ll swirl another one for you.

There are 6 flavors a day (some are seasonal). During my visit the flavors were: original tart, chocolate hazelnut (the newest), peanut butter, mango, pomegranate and lychee. You can’t go wrong with their original tart, which is thick yet not heavy, tangy sweet, a delightful balance between creamy and refreshing, clean and flavorful.

Dry Toppings Bar, Taylor Yogurt Machines

I’m very fond of their toppings. They carry better toppings than most fro-yo shops (e.g., roasted hazelnuts, hazelnut wafer rolls, dark chocolate crisps, waffle cookies), the toppings change, and the fruit always looks fresh. Luxe toppings cost extra.

In addition to fro-yo in a bowl or on a cone, you can get fruit bowls, smoothies, and parfaits. Waffle cookie sandwiches and Greek yogurt (not frozen) are available at some locations but not the Santa Clara one.

Frozen Yogurt

Pricing has changed. It’s increased and the original tart is the same price as the other flavors. I love the toppings flat rate pricing that allows you to pick as many toppings as you want.

Fro-yo: Mini $2.95/ Small $3.50/ Medium $4.50/ Large $6.50

Fro-yo with toppings: Mini $3.50/Small $4.95/Medium $5.95/Large $7.95

The quality is consistently high, with perfect fro-yo texture. The swirls of fro-yo are pretty and they are generous with toppings. The fro-yo is pricey though and you don’t get much of the actual fro-yo. I do recommend getting the Pinkcard loyalty app or card if you are a fan. It’s a great way to earn free fro-yo and stay in touch with Pinkberry.

Parlor 1255, San Francisco, CA

The Parlor 1255, Eatery and Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt

Fro-yo girl here. The new Parlor 1255 creamery + eatery has a lot of promise, offering gourmet sandwiches (lobster roll, pork belly with kimchee, seared tuna nicoise, grilled cheese with figs) made with Acme Bread, salads, breakfast sandwiches, pastries from Starter Bakery, Sightglass Coffee, fresh juices, smoothies, and self-serve fro-yo and ice cream with toppings. Breakfast is served till 10:30 AM.  The menu is seasonal.

The Parlor Store Front

The place is cute and tiny. It looks a little like a rustic barn, with aged looking wood plank walls, some nice tiles where the fro-yo machines are. There is no indoor seating but they have some tables outside. Plus Levi Plaza has plenty of places to sit.

They have 8 rotating fro-yo and ice cream flavors a day and a very small toppings bar with about 14 toppings. The toppings bar has chilled fruit, popping boba, mochi, cookies, candy, etc. and some gourmet items, like TCHO chocolate chips, housemade peanut brittle and housemade caramel corn. Fro-yo and toppings are 49 cents an ounce. You can get sample cups at the register.

SaniServ Machines, Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt

During my visit they had Straus vanilla ice cream, 2 sorbets, one tart fro-yo flavor and 4 sweet fro-yo flavors. I was disappointed by the texture of the Euro Tart and Coffee fro-yo. Both were icier than usual, too soft and a bit gritty. The sweet black cherry fro-yo had a better, smoother, creamier texture but an artificial aftertaste. I hope that they will improve the fro-yo texture. It’s about a week old, so they’re hopefully still learning and adjusting.

SaniServ Frozen Yogurt at The Parlor

I also had a Vietnamese inspired Saigon Chicken sandwich here that was disappointing because it didn’t have much Vietnamese flavor or much chicken.
